SAINT GERASIMOS KEFALONIA - His Life, AGIOS GERASIMOS KEFALONIA PHOTO - Saint Gerasimos (Ayios Yerasimos or Agios Gerasimos) is the patron saint of Kefalonia island. The Monastery of St Yerasimos is located in plateau of Omala. Before arriving in Omala, you pass through lush vineyards and you meet the villages Fragata and Valsamata. Then you go through the valley with the 40 wells and arrive at the Monastery of St Gerasimos. The old church was built in the 16th century. Here lived as ascetic the monk from Trikala Korinthia. Saint Yerasimos is the miraculous saint of the island. Thousands of visitors worship his relic, which is placed in the new church, built after the earthquake of 1953.
ST GERASIMOS - His Life
Saint Yerasimos was scion of the aristocratic family of Notaras. Born in Ano Trikala Korinthia in 1506 and his house is preserved until today. Nobody knows his real name for sure. He studied in the best institutions, then he went to Instabul, where he venerated the grave of his ancestors. Later he became a monk on Mount Athos, and then went to the Holy Land. There he was ordained Archimandrite and remained for 12 years, serving in the church of the Resurrection. In 1555 re turned in Kefalonia and lived as ascetic in a cave in Lassi, near Argostoli. Saint Gerasimos went to Omala 5 years later, where h renovates the country church of the Assumption and founds a female communal monastery, who called it New Jerusalem. Saint Yerasimos passed away on 15 August but we celebrate him the next day. His relic remained miraculously intact. Celebrated on August 16 and October 20, where there is a big Litany.
